Just What Are Tater Tots?

In case you don't know Tater Tots is a registered trademark of the Ore Ida Corporation. A Tater Tot is made of finely grated potatoes that are then formed into the little shapes that you find Tater Tots shaped into.

The product was first developed in 1953 when the Ore Ida founders were trying to come up with a way to use up all the left over potato trimmings. To make a long story short they chopped up the left over potatoes, added flour and then ran the mixture through a machine that cut the resulting product up into those little small pieces that you now find in the bag of Tater Tots.

The product was first offered for sale in 1956 and at first it was a very inexpensive product but because it was so cheap people wouldn't buy it. Ore Ida raised the price and people began to buy the Tater Tots. In today's market people buy about 100 million pounds of Tater Tots a year. Can you even imagine that.

Ore Ida says you're never too old for Tater Tots. In case you don't know Ore Ida has now been making Tater Tots for over 60 years and during that 60 years people have been coming up with all kinds of ways to make delicious Tater Tot dishes. Pour in the cheddar cheese soup and the cream of chicken soup and smooth them out with a spoon. Now pour your sweet potato tater tots in and then the green beans. Sprinkle to taste with the salt and pepper. Let your oven heat up to 350 degrees and then put the casserole in the hot oven for twenty minutes. After twenty minutes take the casserole out of the oven and sprinkle the sharp cheddar cheese over the top of your casserole. Put back in the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese is completely melted. Set out of the oven and let it set for at least 10 minutes before you dish it up and serve it. Offer sour cream on the side for those people that want to add it to their serving. I sometimes also offer a dish of fine diced green onions including the tops.
