How To Steam Your Fresh Vegetables

I just simply love steamed vegetables especially fresh vegetables from my garden or from the Farmers Market. I am also seeing a lot of produce now being sold in bags ready to steam. I usually add a little butter and sea salt for extra flavor but you don't have to.

When you steam vegetables they are cooked just above boiling water and not in the boiling water. Boiling water will destroy part of the nutrients in your vegetables especially your fresh vegetables. Steamed vegetables retain almost all their nutrients. And the nutrients in vegetables are really good for you.

You need to wash all your vegetables especially fresh vegetables under cold running water. Once you have your vegetables washed place them into the steamer basket of your vegetable steamer or into a colander. You can make your own homemade steamer from a colander set over a pot of boiling water.

If your using a colander it needs to set down in the top of a pot of boiling water and you cover the top of the colander with tin foil to keep all the steam in. By keeping the steam in you will be cooking your vegetables.

You only need a small amount of water in the pot under your colander as steamed vegetables cook quickly. You can add butter and salt to the vegetables you are steaming or you can add it to the vegetables after you steam them in a serving bowl.

In order to steam your vegetables you'll need to place the pot on the stove on a burner turned on high with the colander setting in the top of the pot covered in tin foil to keep all the steam in with your vegetables. Most vegetables will cook rather quickly when you cook them with steam.

Steamed vegetables as I said above tend to be much more healthy for you than those cooked in any other way. One really good thing you can do is add dry Italian Seasoning to your vegetables when you are steaming your vegetables. You won't believe how great a little bit of dry Italian Seasoning will make your vegetables taste.

You can steam vegetables and then add other ingredients to them in a serving bowl or dish. You can also steam fish or chicken and serve them along with your steamed vegetables. Shrimp can also be steamed and cooked this way.

If your going to be steaming food often you should consider purchasing a steamer so that you can easily steam vegetables and other foods and in no time at all you may find that you love steamed vegetables and meats cooked in the steamer. Look for a steamer that has multiple steaming baskets so you can steam several things at one time.

If you have a steamer like the above steamer with two baskets you can steam your vegetables in one basket and meat in the other basket. And then combine your items for a delicious steamed meal.

Have You Ever Tried Steamed Vegetables? How About A Steamed Frog More Stew?

I just simply love steamed broccoli and I recently had steamed corn and potatoes and I could not believe how delicious it was. One really delicious dish you can cook with a steamer is a Frog More Stew. No there are no frogs in the stew just delicious vegetables and shrimp.

What you want to do is cut your fresh corn on the cob into small 3 inch pieces and buy the small new potatoes usually sold in the produce section of your super market. You will want some of the New Orleans style summer sausage and a pound or two of large peeled and deveined shrimp.

The new potatoes should be small and if they have not already been washed you will want to wash your new potatoes very well under cold running water. You want to start by steaming all your vegetables and add them to a large bowl. Now steam the sausage after you have cut it into small bite size pieces and you also want to steam the shrimp. Once you have everything cooked in your steamer add everything to the large bowl and add two tablespoons of dry Italian Seasoning, a teaspoon of sea salt, a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and 1/4 cup of real butter to the bowl and stir everything up well to be sure the seasonings coat all your ingredients. Serve your steamed Frog More Stew with toasted garlic bread for a delicious meal.
