Reptiles Pythons and Lizards

Oh my god there's a snake is the cry heard from most people when they see a snake in their yard or garden. But people really need to be better educated on the various reptiles crawling around here in the United States. One of the most common snakes people run across in their yards , gardens or out buildings is the black snake.

The Coluber constrictor is a very common species of snake more commonly called the eastern racers. And guess what these reptiles come in black , blue , brown , and green. And they are non venomous. And do you know that the primary prey of the eastern racer is rodents. Yes rats and mice. So if a black racer is hanging around your back yard , garden , or out building it is really helping you by taking care of any potential rodent problem you may have. As soon as the snake takes care of all the prey in any one area it will move on. Just don't confront these snakes or pick them up and you'll never have to worry about this snake at all.

The Black Rat Snake or Pilot Black Snake or simply black snake is another common species of black snake in the United States that helps to keep the rodent population in check.

Pythons are not native to North America though they did escape into the wild in south Florida during Hurricane Andrew and they have now established themselves especially in the Everglades National Park and the surrounding areas. You should not approach large Pythons over 15 feet at all as these are very aggressive snakes in search of a meal in the wild and they could consider you as a meal.

The Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snake is of the venomous pitviper species and it is the largest rattle snake found in the United States. Quite often a rattlesnake will give you a warning not to approach by rattling its rattler found at the end of its tail. This is where they get the name rattlesnake from.

The King Cobra is the King of the Snakes. And one of the most deadly of all the reptiles. And at 18 plus feet the King Cobra is the worlds largest venomous snakes. Unfortunately King Cobras have also escaped into the wild in south Florida and a homestead man was recently bitten in his back yard while trying to save his dog from the snake. The snake escaped into a canal though a man did get a photo of it as it escaped confirming recent reports that King Cobras have made it into the wild in South Florida. The man survived after a long hospital stay. On at least three recent occasions King Cobras have been run over and killed by automobiles in various parts of south Florida. So it appears that the King Cobra has also established its self in south Florida.

Reptiles have been around for millions of years. One of the longest surviving species is the American Alligator. The Alligator was around when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Even though there are some really scary snakes on this page people need to be better educated about snakes. Don't just kill a snake because it is in your yard , or garden. Study photos or videos of snakes so you can quickly identify non venomous snakes and leave them be. They are usually very beneficial to you as they will make a huge dent in a areas rodent population.

Pythons have established themselves in the Florida Everglades and surrounding areas. The Everglades was a fragile ecological system to start with and the Pythons my cause severe damage to the Florida Ecological System. We can only hope that the King Cobras in south Florida will not be as successful as the pythons have been. You should never turn non native species loose. If you find you can no longer keep a large non native snake turn it over to a Zoo or Wildlife officials. Do not just turn it loose.
