The Story Of Ocean Born Mary
Ocean Born Mary is a ghost story that has been told down through the years. It has been told many different ways and here we have for you one of the versions of the story. James and Elizabeth Wilson were Irish Immigrants from Londonderry Ireland. It was in 1720 that they set sail for America for Londonderry New Hampshire and they had plans to start a new life there.
When they were near to America Elizabeth Wilson gave birth to a baby daughter. But while she was giving birth a strange vessel appeared near their ship and then it fired on their ship. Their ship was boarded by a gang of pirates. The pirate leader was a young man only in his twenty's and he was dark handsome and ruthless. He almost at once gave the order that all the captives be killed but then from down in the hold of the ship came the cries of a baby.
Startled the Pirate Captain ordered the Captain of the ship he had seized to take him to the child. The pirate captain Don Pedro stood and stared at the baby and it was said you could see a softness come over him. He turned to Elizabeth and said if you name this baby after my Mom whose name is Mary I will spare the life's of everyone on this ship. Elizabeth was horribly frightened and she at once agreed that she would name the baby Mary.
Don Pedro sent one of his men back to the Pirate Ship and when he returned he was loaded down with gifts for the baby. The Pirate Captain held a green silk cloth in his hand and he said this is for my Mary's wedding dress. Then he and his men departed the ship and left.
It was not long after the ship landed in Boston Harbor that James Wilson died. He was to never reach Londonderry New Hampshire. His wife and daughter however did go on to Londonderry New Hampshire to claim their land. Ocean born Mary grew into a beautiful tall red headed woman and in 1742 she was married to a man named James Wallace wearing a beautiful wedding dress of green silk. It was the fabric given to her by the Pirate Don Pedro all those years before. They went on to have four sons and a daughter but sadly after the birth of his fourth son Wallace died.
At about that same time Don Pedro the pirate captain retired from the sea and built a nice large home in New Hampshire. Don Pedro had never forgotten ocean born Mary and he inquired as to what had become of her. He found that Mary was a widow in Londonderry New Hampshire and he asked her to marry him and she said yes. He moved her and her children to his huge house in Henniker New Hampshire. He gave Mary a beautiful coach with four large white horses and she was seen often driving her coach around New Hampshire. One by one her sons and daughter grew up and settled near Mary.
One day coming home early from shopping Mary saw Don Pedro and one of his pirate friends carrying a large black trunk to the orchard in the back of the house. She heard sounds of digging and then silence. Don Pedro came back to the house alone and they did not speak of what Mary had seen. And then one day Don Pedro told Mary that should he die she should bury him and his treasure under the houses hearthstone. One day not long after Mary came home to find the house empty. She searched through the house and then went and looked in the orchard. There she found her beloved Don Pedro dead stabbed to death with a pirates sword.
Mary buried Don Pedro and the treasure under the fireplace hearth and they remain to this day. After her death in 1814 people would see a beautiful red haired woman walking up and down the houses staircase. And people would see a beautiful red haired woman driving a coach with four white horses.
People who live in the house today say they see the ghosts of a beautiful red haired woman and a dark Spanish man walking around the house.
