Mango's Are One Of The Most Delicious Tropical Fruits
Mango's are a tropical fruit of the Mango Tree. The fruit is oblong in shape and a little larger than a pear in size. It is green in color, turning orange-yellow when ripe, and it has a delicious, pleasantly acid pulp. The mango tree was originally from the East Indian area. It is cultivated in the East Indies, China, Malaysia, The Philippines, India, Thailand, and in California, Texas, and Florida in the United States.
The Mango has been cultivated for centuries in Southeast Asia and Mango's are closely connected with the religion and folklore of the East. The mango tree is considered sacred in India where mango's are a staple of Indian food, and a basic ingredient of chutney. Wealthy Indian gardeners often collect mango trees, and some gardens have hundreds of varieties.
Portuguese traders first carried the mango to Africa from the far east. From there it was introduced into South America and from there it found it's way into the Caribbean nations. By the early 19th century the mango had arrived in Mexico and in 1833 a Florida horticulturalist planted the first mango trees south of Miami. They were lost after his death, and mango's were reintroduced to Florida around 1858 just before the American Civil War.
Mango's are eaten fresh, but may be made into jams or jellies, or into desserts such as ice cream or the new hit smoothies. If you click that link you'll find wonderful recipes for smoothies made with mango. Green mango's are used in making chutney and pickles.
