Making Money From Herbs

You will want to check out what herbs will grow best in your area and these are the herbs you will want to grow and market. Selling herb plants is probably the fastest way to make money from herbs. You will want each container labeled as to what is in it so your customers will know exactly what they are buying and you will be able to keep up with what you are selling.
In order to have herb plants to sell when they are most wanted you will need to start your seeds in late winter or very early spring. You can start herb seeds in small Styrofoam coffee cups and it will be quite easy for you to write on the cups with a permanent marker as to what is in the cup. The cups are inexpensive to purchase and are just perfect for marketing your herbs in.
Dried herbs is a great way to market your herbs. You can dry your herbs and then place one ounce of dried herbs in clearly marked very small brown paper bags. You then need to determine a price for each small bag of herbs. Keep your prices on a list and don't mark the price on the little paper bags. People may want to give the little bags of herbs away as gifts and most people won't want the price on the bags. You can even decorate the little herb bags up pretty and this will help with the sale of the little bags of herbs.
Develop and write up a information sheet for each herb you are selling. The more information you can provide the better the chances you will have for a sale and when you make a sale your going to hope that your customer will return in the future and make another purchase. You want to build up a customer base. You can offer recipes and even a newsletter along with each little bag of herbs. In today's world people love information and the more information you can provide about the herbs your selling the more sales you will make. People love recipes and you can sell well written recipes accompanied by information for 50 cents to two dollars. Be sure to include all the uses for that herb and a complete history of that herb if possible.
Once you have studied and educated yourself well on the herbs you offer for sale you could even offer classes about herbs. At your classes offer samples of food made from your herbs and little sample bags of herbs for people to take home and try. Just be sure to keep the topic of your class to one that you know very well and provide a way for people to order larger quantities of your herbs from you once they try the little sample packs. Hand out newsletters and recipe sheets at your classes. You can charge $20 to $40 for a well thought out class with samples of food and teas made from your herbs. The ideal class should last about two hours with a 15 minute break for the bathroom after one hour. You want to give them enough information and handouts to keep them interested and get them to bring their friends to your next class.
