One home remedy that just about everyone has heard of is warm milk. Its been around forever and with some people it works very well.
If you love animails try having your cat or dog sleep with you. Its been found that pets help people relax and pets ( rubbing them ) have even actually lowered blood pressure.

Sometimes the best answer of all is to just not fight it. If you can't sleep at all get up and do something. Catch up on that book you have been trying to write , watch tv , or read a book. You might just surprise yourself and find that either you just drift off to sleep setting there reading or you will suddenly find your self so sleepy you will be able to drift off to hopefully a good nights sleep.
