How Do You Make Authentic Scones
How Do You Make Authentic Scones
The scone is similar to an American biscuit. Scones were first made in Scotland. In Scotland it is known as a quick bread and scones are often served with Cream Tea or Devonshire Tea. You will find scones made from wheat, barley, and oats and baking powder is used to make them rise.
Today you will find scones made all around the world from many different things and you'll find them in all sizes and shapes. You'll find scones that contain everything from raisins, currants, dates, cheese, and even potatoes. I myself make them all kinds of ways and I really enjoy them.
I bet you didn't know that there are even lemonade scones made from lemonade and cream rather than cream and butter. The scone didn't used to be really popular in America but you can now find delicious scones in a lot of Americas cities. In Australia pumpkin scones are really popular and if you look around you'll find the scone is becoming increasingly more popular around the world. Scones are served with coffee or tea or as a dessert while biscuits served here in the United States are served as bread. In the American south especially you'll find biscuits stuffed with ham or sausage or covered with gravy. Scones are often split and filled with butter and jelly and you'll find fruit filled scones topped with cream cheese icing. If you've never had a scone below is a recipe so you can make your own scones.
How To Make Scones
For Your Scones You Will Need
1. Four Cups All Purpose Plain Flour.
2. Two Teaspoons Baking Powder.
3. One Teaspoon Baking Soda.
4. Five Tablespoons White Granulated Sugar.
5. Two Sticks Of Cold Real Butter.
6. One Cup Half And Half.
7. One Teaspoon Ground Sea Salt.
To Glaze Your Scones You Will Need
1. One Large Egg.
2. One Fourth Cup Half And Half.
You will want to start off by pre heating your oven to 375 degrees.
Now in a large mixing bowl you will want to mix together your baking soda, baking powder, salt, flour, and sugar and mix it all up together very well together.
Now you'll want to cut your butter up into very small pieces and add it to your flour mixture. Mix it all up together very well until it resembles course corn meal. You want to work all the butter into the flour mixture very well. Using your hands is really the easiest way to do this.
Pour the half and half into the mixture and mix it together very well together. Work all your dough up into a large ball and wrap it in plastic wrap and chill your dough in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
While your dough is chilling you will want to sprinkle flour onto a clean counter or cutting board so you can roll your dough out. Prepare a baking pan by spraying it with vegetable baking spray and in a small bowl mix up your egg and half and half for the glaze.
Remove the ball of dough from the refrigerator and cut it in half. Wrap half the dough back up and return it to the refrigerator. Put the dough you have onto the floured surface and roll it out 1/4" thick and use a biscuit cutter or cookie cutter to cut out your scones and carefully place them on the prepared baking sheet. Take a kitchen brush and brush the prepared glaze over the tops and sides of all your scones.
Put the pan of scones in the oven and bake for 12 to 14 minutes until they are golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool them on wire racks or on plates or trays. And guess what you now have scones. Serve them with butter, jelly, and jam.
You can use heart shaped cookie cutters and cut out and make some beautiful scones. You can of course use any shape cookie cutters you want to cut out and make your scones. Some people like to cut them out with a round biscuit cutter and then they split them in half and fill them with butter, jam, and jelly and serve at once. Or you can fill each round split scone with strawberry jam and use the strawberry jam scones to make strawberry shortcakes with. I guarantee you that they are oh so delicious made this way.
Don't forget you still have that other half of the scone dough in the refrigerator to roll out and cut into more delicious scones. I often make scones and add about double the sugar and a tablespoon of cinnamon to the scone dough and then after I cut out and bake the cinnamon sugar scones I make a cream cheese icing to go on top of them.
I really hope there are some delicious homemade scones in your future very soon. If you make the scones please post a comment and let us all know how they turn out for you. And thanks for reading my Hub Page.
