Wrights Square is located at the corner of Bull Street and Presidents Street in Savannah Georgia. And if you visit Wrights Square in Savannah notice one unusual thing about the trees growing here on this square. They do not have the Spanish moss growing on them that grows on all the other trees in Savannah.
It is here that the story of Alice Riley and her husband played out. The young woman was a indentured servant and she and her husband went to work for a man named William Wise who local people say was a very cruel but wealthy man. The local people tell the story that William Wise beat the husband badly on a daily basis and that he raped Ann Riley often.
The couple could not stand what was being done to them and they came up with a plan to kill William Wise and steal some of his money and escape to a ship on the river and get away from Savannah and William Wise. One afternoon the young woman was helping Wise with his bath and her husband ran in and they drowned William Wise by forcing his head under water.
They ran away but were caught by a angry search mob on the Isle of Hope and returned to Savannah where they were tried and convicted of the murder of William Wise. Her and her husband were taken to the gallows on Wright Square where she watched as her husband Robert was hung.
When the hangman turned to Alice Riley she told him she was pregnant and asked if she could still be hung. She was taken to a doctor and examined and he said that Alice Riley was indeed pregnant. She was taken back to jail where her baby was born. Eight months later in January of 1735 Alice Riley was taken back to the gallows on Wright Square and hung by the neck until dead. She screamed and pleaded not to be killed and said that the baby's father was William Wise who had raped her. After she was hung she was left hanging for three full days as a warning to other people that justice would indeed be carried out in Savannah.
The Ghost Story Of Alice Riley
A coastal Georgia legend says that the Spanish Moss will not grow where innocent blood was spilled. And while she was in Jail waiting to be hung Alice Riley told anyone who would listen that William Wise was a monster and he had done unspeakable things to her but it did not save her life.
Many times each year people claim to see a young woman dressed in rags running thru Wrights Square screaming for her baby. People also say they see her setting under the tree where the gallows once stood crying. If you approach her she vanishes. People have tried to prove why no Spanish Moss will grow in the trees on the square but no one has been able to.

Hi,
I know there are some groups of paranormal investigations that take people out on ghost hunts to known haunted locations with ghost hunting equipment. Do you guys do anything like that in Savannah? Three of us are going to be in Savannah between 9/12 and 9/16/11 and are trying to find someone that offers to take people on actual ghost investigations. If you do can you email me back with more info as to what it costs etc?
Thanks,
Sue
