The Halloween Moon Crab is originally from Costa Rica and is 2 to 2 1/2 inches wide and in captivity they can live as long as 10-12 years. These crabs are nocturnal and do most of their moving around at night. They are social creatures and do best in groups of two to four. But do not over crowd them or they will fight and could seriously harm each other.

The Halloween Moon Crab has been called the most colorful crab on the planet because of the beautiful colors found on the crabs. In the wild these crabs are often observed carrying leafs and food into their burrows and climbing trees.
You can easily turn a 50 gallon aquarium into a great Halloween Moon Crab habitat. Keep in mind that you are going to need a small pool of water and it really should have a water fall falling into it or a small stream of water circulating through it to help keep the humidity in the crabs enclosure up.
These Halloween Moon Crabs which are part of the Hermit Crab family love to climb so you need to provide them with sturdy tree branches inside their enclosure to climb on. You can also take plastic pipe that is 3-4 inches across and 5-6 inches long and bury them in the enclosure floor to give them burrows like they would have back home in Costa Rica.
The temperature in your Halloween Moon Crab enclosure should be maintained at 75 to 80 degrees at all time and their really must be falling or running water in the crabs enclosure to keep the humidity up in the crabs enclosure.
Your Halloween Moon Crabs will do well on the commercial Hermit Crab Food but they also like crickets , meal worms , apples , peaches , and bananas. You can also give them small pieces of fish and chicken. The Halloween Moon Crabs are pretty docile and in no time at all once they get used to you they will reach out with a claw and take food from your hand.
The really important things to remember about your Halloween Moon Crabs are that their must be water kept running or falling in your crab enclosure to keep the humidity up and your crab enclosure must be kept at 75 to 80 degrees. Also remember that your Halloween Moon Crabs are nocturnal and they will be much more active at night.

I have a Halloween Crab, and I love it, but for some reason I had white mold growing in the tank, and it started to get on him. How do I get it off him, and how do I keep the white mold from returning?
You should clean his cage or enclosure thoroughly with warm soap and water and be sure to rinse everything very well before you put it back together. If you keep his home very clean the mold should go away.
If your crab is burying food be sure to dig it up and remove the food. And give your crab only what it will eat. Don't put surplus food into the tank or enclosure.

A ten gallon is ok for one, but you can keep about four in a twenty. They can be territorial but the fights are just displays and no-one gets hurt.
I just got two moon crabs they dug a hole buried themselves and i havn't seen them since when do they come out
How warm is your tank. Do you have a thermometer in it. It should be 75 to 80 degrees in their enclosure all the time. But keep in mind that the crabs are nocturnal. Are you sure they are not coming out at night.
You should never just keep 1 crab and it is normal for you not to see them for a while after getting them. They do get stressed easy. I recommend a minimum of 3 crabs. and provide them with lots of hiding spots as well as access to fresh and salt water and make sure you use declorinated water. and keep the humidity level high around 70-80% and tempetures on avarege of mid 80's. Offer diffrent foods i find my crabs like to eat fish food as well as fish and crikets.

Okay so i have two halloween moon crabs, I have had them for a couple of months. I woke up this morning and one of the crabs was in his water dish belly up. So i thought he was dead well when i went to get him out he started moving so i flipped him back over and he has been fine. Well it is night now and i was watching the same crab, still in his water dish he has like bubbles coming out of his mouth is that normal or what should i do?

Ive had a moon crab for about two years. he is in a 40 gallon fish tank with fish in it. its full till about 3-4 inches. I have two floating docks attached to the side at the top of the water so he can climb out and chill. i also have a turtle hood ( which is just a really a box with a ramp) that gives him room to move out of the water. H e cruises both fish tank and top often. eats dried shrimp, mangoes, and sometimes my fish :( when he can cath them.

the halloween crab is an amazing creature they must be highly intelligent as well... i wonder how big thier brains are? hummmm
