Gardening Tips For The New Gardener

One of the most important tips for new gardener's is for them to start small. You don't want to get overwhelmed and just give up. You should keep in mind that a 30 sq ft. vegetable garden is enough for 30 plants and what you can do is start in the early spring with

1. Radishes

2. Lettuce

3. Onions

4. Turnip Greens

All four of these can be planted in rows and if you have rich organic soil you should even end up with some delicious turnips. You can also in most parts of the United States plant these four vegetables in the very early spring. If your in the deep south this means near the end of February or early March. But you need to get your soil ready. If you have a compost heap or bin you can add this to your garden soil. If you need to know how to build a great, quick, and easy compost bin then just click right here.

In a lot of counties and cities especially in the deep south in the USA the city or county may collect all of the leafs and place them in one place so you can come by with your truck and pick up some of the leaf compost. You want the oldest looking compost there and you want to have your garden spot ready for it when you go and pick up the leaf compost. This means you will have already tilled up your garden spot. Once you get your leaf compost there you want to spread it to a depth of 6 inches and then here comes the hard part.

You want to take your garden tiller and till the leaf compost down into your garden soil. If you don't have a garden tiller consider renting one for this job. If your soil is poor you may also at this time wish to add in some black cow manure ( You Can Purchase This In Bags At Walmart ). You will want to add 6 40 lb. bags for a 30 sq. ft garden. Use the garden tiller to work the black cow manure down into the soil. If you have added in the leaf compost and black cow manure you should have a very nice garden spot. You are now ready to plant and if its early spring you can't go wrong by starting with radishes, lettuce, onions and turnip greens. And remember if you are hoping to grow turnips to harvest your turnip greens with scissors. This way you will not disturb the turnip roots and your turnips will keep growing. Watch at the base of your turnip greens for turnips to start growing. You want to harvest your turnips when they are 3-5 inches around for the tastiest turnips.

Your later crops can be planted once you have harvested all your radishes, turnip greens, onions and lettuce. You will want to till over the garden spot again and then you can plant.

1. Pole Beans

2. Squash, Either Zucchini or Yellow Crook Neck. ( You only need 6-8 Squash Plants.

3. Sweet Corn

4. Tomatoes ( You Will Want 6-8 Tomato Plants)

You want to grow your pole beans so they grow up. You can do this easily by tying 3 pieces of bamboo into a tee-pee. You plant your pole beans under the tee-pee and start them up the tee-pee and tie them to it as they grow up the tee-pee.

You will have the best results if you purchase tomato cages for your tomatoes.

For the new gardener I would suggest buying your squash, and tomato plants already started. This way it will give you a jump on the growing season. You will want to grow your sweet corn and pole beans from seeds. Your pole beans will keep producing pole beans all the way to frost if you keep the beans picked off of the vines.

As you grow more and more vegetables and you get comfortable with your garden skills you can expand your garden size if you have room and add in other vegetables you may be wanting to grow. I love gardening and have a huge vegetable garden but you can grow a lot of delicious vegetables in a very small space.

Plant a few Marigold Flower Plants in your garden to keep away garden pests. Plant them near your tomatoes and your tomatoes will be pest free for the season.

Okay anyone else have a garden tip or hint you would like to share.
