Gardening , Grow Your Own Vegetables And Enjoy

Tomatoes can be started in small beds or pots from seeds and as soon as the tomatoes have grown a bit and the danger of frost has passed you can plant your tomatoes outside in a prepared tomato bed. Your tomatoes will do best in rich black soil. And tomatoes love water so keep that in mind. If possible your tomatoes would probally do best on the south side of your garden or in a area where they can get the full morning sun and shade in the hottest part of the day.

You can of course get a jump on the growing season by buying your tomato plants already started down at your garden supply store and if you plan it right have ripe tomatoes before anyone else.  

To me tomatoes are the best vegetable ( really a fruit ) there is grown in the garden. As a child growing up I loved my grandmothers cherry tomatoes which she growed every year. They are small enough that you can simply pop them in your mouth and enjoy. My grandmother grew a type of cherry tomato called grape cherry tomatoes and they simply hung in bunches on her cherry tomato plants which she grew at the back of her garden and she put tomato cages made of wire around them every year. She hung tin pie pans from the tomato cages to keep away birds.

Tomatoes come in all different sizes , sizes and shapes. And if you check out seed catalogs you will find some really tasty exotic tomatoes like the german yellow tomato that is oh so good.

And there is nothing like a tomato sandwich made of slices of a big ripe juicy tomato , sliced loaf bread , mayonaise and salt and pepper to taste. If you've never had a tomato sandwich you really should give it a try. Oh they are so good. Especially with a hot pepper pod and a glass of good cold milk.

And fried green tomatoes. Yes they were made famous by the movie by the same name. But you see I really did grow up eating fried green tomatoes and as children me and ny brother used to beg my Mom to make them. Over the years I have eaten them all over the south but none have tasted as good as those that my Mom made.  

You should plant your pole beans when all dangers of frost are past. Keep in mind that you will have to provide something for your beans to grow on. The bamboo teepee's work perfect. You can also do container gardening with pole beans and set up your bamboo teepee up in the air over the beans. As they grow they will grow up and cover the bamboo teepee. And you can pick the beans easily.

To prevent disease don't pick your beans when the plants are wet. Only pick when the plants are dry. Don't plant your beans in the same exact place over three years in a row.

Feed your Pole Beans,  Miracle Grow Plant Food several times during the growing season and the plants will thank you with an abundance of pole beans that you can cook and enjoy.

And you should ask other gardners in your area what is the right variety of pole beans for your area. Or ask at your local garden supply store. They can usually provide you with great advice.  

Do you want to get more tasty fresh beans from less space in your garden. Then you really should consider growing prolific pole beans. They are so great tasting and easy to grow that I think of them as the perfect garden vegetable. Unlike other beans pole beans will grow all season long as long as you keep them picked and well watered. And because the beans love to grow staight up if given the opportunity you can use less space and grow more wonderful tasting beans.

Pole Beans are wonderful at just about any stage of growth you pick them. Because Pole Beans have such prolific vines you need to provide the beans with a place to grow up. If you look up at the photo above you can see a great way to grow your pole beans. You can easily build teepees of bamboo poles to grow your pole beans on. If you keep the beans picked as they grow you will have Pole Beans until frost. You should keep in mind they freeze best when the pods are full. Keep them well watered at either very early morning or late evening after the sun has gone down.  

Plant a few marigolds or a row of marigolds to keep most garden pests including rabbits out of your garden. Marigolds may not be the best smelling flower but they grow great and will keep away insect pests and rabbits from your garden.

And marigolds are completely natural and work great to keep away pests.

Zucchini is a prolific producer and you will need at most 6-8 plants and you will still be over run with this delicious vegetable. It is interesting to note that Zucchini does not keep well frozen so it is best to enjoy it while in season.

You can plant your zucchini from seeds or buy your plants already started. You should only plant your zucchini after all dangers of frost have passed. You should allow at least 3 feet between each plant when you plant your zucchini.

It is very important to provide your zucchini plants with plenty of water. Water them either very early morning before the sun is up or late evening after the sun has gone down. And keep in mind that once your zucchini starts producing it is going to produce huge amounts of squash in a hurry. You will be giving them away and trying to find new recipes for them. If all else fails there is always the neighbors back steps while they are gone.

On a serious note your local homeless shelter can always use your surplus vegetables. And you can feel good knowing you helped to feed hungry people.  

If you have an unlimited supply of water than your lucky indeed, Some people in drought stricken areas of the country are not alloweed to use water to water their garden or lawn. If you want you can create your own supply of water by using rain barrels to save the rainwater that falls on your house or buildings and your plants will love you for it. Just be sure to either use barrels with secure covers or cover your barrels with fine wire mesh to prevent mosquitoes from using your rain barrels as a nursery for their young.
