The Native American's used Hilton Head as a temporary living place and a place to harvest the local seafood for thousands of years before the first white man ever came to the area. Huge piles of oyster shells are still on the island today from where the Native American's ate the oysters for thousands of years. It's not known if there was ever a permanent Native American settlement on the island. It was probably because of the hurricanes that visit this area often that there was no permanent settlement by the Native Americans.

The shell ring at the entrance to Sea Pines is on the registry of National Historic Places and is protected by law.
