Feline Diabetes

Most vets agree that feline diabetes is almost completely preventable. Now the really important question you should be asking yourself is how can you prevent your cat from developing feline diabetes.

Pet Food companies encourage you to free feed dry cat food to your cats. They want you to keep a feeder or bowl full just setting around but by doing so you are really being cruel to your cat. You are sending your cat or cat right down a road that unfortunately can help them to develop feline diabetes.

Did you know that cat food is mostly made from cereals and grains. And you probably don't know it but cereals and grains especially corn and wheat are especially high in carbohydrates. Your cat needs to get its proteins from meat. Cats are designed to get their nutrition from proteins not cereals and grains. A cats body system can not even break down carbohydrates. In the wild cats are predators and we all know that predators eat meat not cereals and grains. Your cat really needs a diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates.

Dry cat food is really junk food. Yes to a cats system that dry cat food is jelly donuts and triple chocolate shakes. You really need to feed your cat high quality canned cat food. Most cats don't drink a lot of water because a cat is supposed to get their water from its food. Cats that eat a diet that is mostly dry cat food quite often are dehydrated and this can lead to kidney problems and possible renal failure especially in older cats. Cats that are fed a diet heavy in dry cat food are also prone to be fatter than they should be and these cats quite often develop feline diabetes.

Are you beginning to understand why it is so important to feed your cat a high quality canned cat food. Some people will argue that it should be all natural canned cat food but I don't feel this is really necessary just that it be high quality canned cat food.

You should know by now that high quality canned cat food can help to prevent feline diabetes , obesity , and kidney problems. But some cats will have a problem with the high quality canned cat food and may really put on quite a meowing fit when you cut off the dry cat food. Your cat has been eating junk food all its life and now your going to have to be the tough guy and change your kitty's eating habits.

You need to establish cat meal times and no matter how much of a poor little me show your cat puts on you need to stick to the meal schedule you set up and feed only high quality canned cat food. The Cat Food companies put all kinds of tasty things on the cereal and grain based cat food to get the cats to eat it. But once your cat gets used to regular meals and high quality canned cat food your cat will be much healthier and happier.

But your cat used to the dry cat food may try to convince you that its going to die of starvation right in front of you but don't fall for it. Preventing feline diabetes is much easier than having to treat it later.

Also be sure to give your cat plenty of fresh water. When you change your cat over to high quality canned cat food your cat should be getting a lot of their water in the food they are eating but you will also want to be sure to keep your cat or cats fresh water out all the time and you want this water to be changed at least once daily or if becomes dirty.
