One of the real problems with BPA is that it is a synthetic estrogen and if you heat the bottle up, wash it, or stress it in some way the BPA can leach out into the contents of the bottle and enter your body.

Another concern is that a lot of canned food cans have plastic lining and this plastic lining often contains BPA. In this case there is nothing to stop the BPA from leaching out into the food in the can and when you eat the food that was in the can you are also eating BPA. The report on CNN scared me enough that I am going to stop eating canned foods. It is sad that the FDA and the American Government has known since 1937 that BPA ( Bisphenol A ) has the potential to cause severe health problems in people and they have done nothing to stop the situation. And there are no warnings on plastic bottles or on plastic lined cans of food warning people of the potential health hazards.

A recent study conducted by the CDC found BPA in the urine of 94% of all people surveyed. So BPA is definitely getting out of the plastic it is in and into people. And no one is standing there on the street corner screaming a warning at you.

I know I've always told people to read the labels on food items to see what they really contain but I know for a fact that I have never seen a warning label on any food can or package warning me that it contains BPA or what the potential health hazards of consuming BPA could be.

It really burns me up to think that they can put warnings on cigarettes and liquor but not on products containing BPA. I don't know this for a fact and it is only my opinion but I would almost bet you that it is all about the money is why there is no warning on products that contain BPA. If they put a warning on the products containing BPA then people would stop buying those products and it would take money out of some fat cats pocket.

I know I'm going to keep doing research on BPA and I will come back here to this Hub Page and publish everything I find. I find it especially alarming that baby bottles are being sold here in the United States that contain BPA when it is illegal to sell baby bottles in Canada with BPA. Please post your comments below.

Do You Know What BPA Is?

Today is Monday October 24th 2011 and I just saw the story on CNN this morning about the serious concerns of using products that contain BPA. So I decided I would check into it and see exactly what I could find out about BPA and what can it do to you. They said on CNN if your drinking out of a plastic bottle and it contains a 3 or a 7 on its bottom it's probably a recycled bottle and it most likely contains BPA.

In case you're wondering BPA is an organic compound that is used in the manufacturing of plastic products and epoxy resins. It has been known in the United States and by the FDA since 1937 that the substance is estrogenic and effects women and female children. Some reports have said that women with high levels of BPA may have more female children than male children and it has been shown to have negative effects on people's health. It may even cause obesity, prostrate cancer, birth defects, reduced birth weights, slow growth in children and other serious health concerns yet BPA continues to be used especially in recycled plastic bottles in the United States. Look on the bottom of the bottles and if you find a 3 or a 7 on the bottom of the bottle it most likely contains BPA. It was a 2008 study which found that exposure to BPA may cause a person to be obese.

It is sad that BPA is still being used in the United States today because a United States FDA report said that it had serious concerns for fetuses, infants, and small children who were exposed to BPA. The Canadian's declared BPA to be a toxic substance in September of 2010. In the EU and in Canada it is illegal to use BPA in the manufacturing of baby bottles. But here in the United States BPA continues to be used especially in the manufacturing of recycled plastic bottles. A study conducted in 2011 on the chemicals pregnant women are exposed to found BPA in 96 percent of all women. That in its self should alarm the public to the health effects BPA may be having on them.

If you really are concerned about BPA then you should know that recycled plastic bottles that have the numbers 1,2,4,5, and 6 are unlikely to contain BPA. Though this is in no way a guarantee that the recycled plastic bottles do not contain BPA. You should know that there are seven classes of plastic used in the manufacturing of plastic products and that type 7 is the catch all class and usually it will contain Bisphenol A which is known by its more common name BPA.

It does make me wonder why the United States Government continues to allow BPA to be used in the United States when they know it constitutes a health risk. Maybe if you have concerns about BPA you should contact your U.S. Senator or Congresspersons office and voice your concerns about BPA. Tell your local supermarkets and grocery stores that you won't purchase products from them that you know contains BPA. If a recycled bottle has a 3 or a 7 on its bottom its likely that it contains BPA.

Warning Kids Are Being Exposed To Toxic BPA

Recent studies have shown that plastic bottles, recycled plastic bottles, and food cans lined with plastic can leach Bisphenol A ( BPA ) into the liquid or food they contain and BPA is a toxic substance that has been shown to cause birth defects in mice. And I don't know about you but I don't want my kids eating a toxic substance.

If you microwave food in plastic containers it can cause the BPA to be released into the food and then you feed the food to children and they get exposed to BPA. Recent studies conducted on children found BPA in the urine of every child tested. This should set off alarm bells ringing all over the United States.

If BPA can cause birth defects and growth abnormalities in mice do you want your children eating or drinking from containers that contain BPA. Every American should insist that BPA be taken out of any food or beverage item in the United States. And we for sure should not be allowing the sale of baby bottles in the USA that contain BPA. The sale of baby bottles containing BPA are illegal in Canada and the EU. Why are United States babies not protected from toxic BPA. Why indeed. The numbers are often hard to see. You may have to have it under a lamp or outside to be able to see the numbers.
