How do you know if your house is haunted and what do you do about it. All my life I have had experiences with ghosts and the paranormal. I truly believe that there are people who can see ghosts and other things and people who can't. Maybe its because some of us are more open minded than others but I don't think so. I have been in the room of a house where some people saw something paranormal happen or go on in the room while some people in the room saw nothing. So it has to be that some people can see paranormal activity while other people can not.
I come from a family that can see paranormal activity and ghosts. My Mother recently passed away back on January 6th of 2010 and all her life she saw ghosts and paranormal activity. We both saw things in the room with other people while some of the people in the room saw or heard nothing. This Hub Page is all about how to tell if your house is haunted. If you suspect that your house is haunted you should keep a journal of what paranormal experiences you are experiencing in your house. If something happens write it down. And be sure you do your own investigation to see if there is a logical explanation for what you are seeing or hearing. Quite often water pipes can and do make knocking sounds and even moans and screeches that you would swear are paranormal but they are not. Squirrels or other animals getting into peoples attics have scared some people so bad they have abandoned their home. I once knew of a pair of chipmunks in the walls of a house that had the people living in the home convinced that their house was haunted. So if you hear or are hearing strange noises look for the source. If your seeing something strange look for the source. I once knew of a woman that was being scared to death by a cars lights on a street behind her house shining in a new mirror she had recently had her grandson hang up. So always be sure to rule out anything causing the sound or anything causing you to see something your sure is paranormal.
But if your hearing footsteps upstairs when no one living is upstairs or the footsteps are going up and down your stairs then there is the possibility that there is something paranormal going on in your house.
Some things to watch out for in a real haunting is for commonly used items to disappear and reappear. If something is gone search around and make sure that the item or items are really vanishing and that you aren't just misplacing things.
If you smell a smell of perfume or flowers where the smell should not be then its quite possible that you have something paranormal going on.
If your in a house that you suspect of being haunted and you feel the hair stand up on your arms and on the back of your neck then yes you may have something paranormal going on in your house. But you also want to make sure you don't have high emf from electrical equipment going on. If you have something like this going on in your house you may want to get a emf meter and check your house or you may want to get someone like a electrician to come in and check out your house with a emf meter.
Its important here that you know that their are two distinct forms of haunting's. Those are a intelligent haunting where the ghost may interact with you or a residual haunting where the same scene out of time is played over and over and the ghosts or ghosts involved in the haunting probably have no ideal you are even there.
If you live in a new house then there is probably not a haunting going on in your house. I'm not saying it can't happen I'm just saying that its not as likely to happen in a new house as it is to happen in a house where people have lived and died. You will find that houses or buildings where people have lived for a long time and people have actually died there that you will have a much higher chance of paranormal activity going on.

So You Think That Your House Is Haunted
If you suspect that your house is haunted check out the below list to see if any of these things are going on in your house.
1. Items appearing or disappearing. Especially if you have items that you know are there vanishing and then coming back later either there or in another location.
2. Do you have doors , cabinets , drawers etc that are opening or closing on their own. Here you should check out if a air conditioner or a heater could be closing a door when it goes on or off. If a bedroom door closes every time the air conditioner comes on then it is probably not paranormal.
3. If you have lights going off or on then you may have something paranormal going on but again look around for natural causes. If its a touch lamp there are all kinds of things that can make that light go off and on. If you have a touch lamp going off and on at will I suggest first you ask questions if you dare asking if the suspected spirit can turn on or turn off the lamp when you ask. If not replace the lamp with a regular lamp and see what happens.
4. Unexplained noises. But again ask yourself and be true with yourself is it footsteps or is it a animal or animals making the noise. Is their a logical explanation for the noise you are hearing. Is there something that could be causing the noise you are hearing.
5. Strange animal behavior is a sure sign you may have paranormal activity going on. I once lived in a house where my cats would not go in a basement room. A murder had took place many years before in that basement room and the cats would not go into the room. The older mother cat would look down into the room and her hair would stand up like she was seeing something sinister.
6. Do you encounter unexplained smells. If you smell perfume or flowers look for the source. Candles can quite often be the source for unexplained smells. If you smell roses in a room make double sure that there is nothing in the area that could be causing that smell.
7. Are you seeing shadow people. Do you catch a glimpse of a shadow appearing or disappearing. Do you see a shadow person dart across the end of a hall or do you catch the glimpse of a shadow person in a attic or a basement. If you suspect you have a haunting keep a journal and every time something happens write it down. If you have a digital camera take photos if you see something. Is there really any place that isn't haunted? Seriously. Every place that I have lived has had at least a few of these things.
I had a pic taken of me once in the early morning while I was rehearsing a dance. It later appeared online as a pic of a ghost. Seriously!
But we've also had the scent of flowers follow us around alot too. So I do believe something or someone is out there.
In the small inns around Maryland and Virgina, especially the Eastern Shore, in what were former Inns and overnight rooming houses, many a night is shaken by moans, rocking chairs and other manifestations of other beings being with you. Nothing bad ever happened unlike in the current trend of movies with other world people invading our turf. First time it's a bit scary, bu when your tell the owner, they usually say something like, "Oh Tom just wanted to see what you looked like.". And SMILE. David Russell

My boyfriend and I recently moved to an apartment above a business in a historic down town (established 1800's - 1920). We have wood floors and some old wiring, but mostly new. A month in, the business owner below asked if we noticed anything odd. She improved the space prior, and said that while she was painting she would notice lights off that should be on, and vice versa. Didn't take much stock in this. We adopted a dog around this time, and I was alone one night w/the dog and cat, relaxing on the couch, almost ready to doze off. I heard a very loud creak from a nearby floor board. They creak, but ONLY when stepped on. The pets were asleep, but the dog woke up, and started walking the rooms on high alert. Not long after, the bf and pets were all asleep in the living room, and I heard creaking floor boards/footsteps cross the adjoining dining room. Now it gets more weird. The dog became obsessed w/a corner of the living room. She paced the room for over an hour, and always returned to the same corner. She was fixated. She would walk away, then suddenly turn, and check her body, like something touched her. She would jump at something, then continue to pace. It was beyond eerie, so I took a cell clip of this. That dog suddently turned aggressive outside on walks, which we attributed to leash aggression, but it got so bad we had to give her up. Now we are fostering a new dog. Sweet as pie, and had a tough life. She's suddenly starting to nip visitors in the house, and goes ballistic outside on the leash. Personally, I don't think it's a direct relation, but I know people who disagree. I am personally feeling like I'm losing my mind. I hear noises from the living room when I'm in the bedroom, and I'm feeling abnormally stressed, paranoid and strung out lately. Granted, my life did get more hectic, but I keep getting his gut feeling that something isn't right. I am a dog lover through and through, but I've had feelings of apprehension toward both dogs that didn't start right away. Feelings that I can't even explain, but just sense. My cat isn't acting out, but will sit and stare into this corner of my living room for hours. Our overhead lights have burned out in 2 rooms now, and replacment bulbs don't work. This could just be an electrical problem, but I also noticed that both bedside lamps dim and flicker sometimes. Now that I've thoroughly bored you, do you think I'm just crazy?
It really does sound like you may have a haunting going on. Very similar things go on in the house I live in all the time. I am emailing you back.
I can totally relate to ur story. I recently moved from a small city to a larger city with my two kids and husband and two small dogs. I have a szchnauzer and a maultese both r housebroken and have been for a while. With that said, here is where my story starts. We have been living in r home for approximatly 10 weeks, at first I noticed a few subtle things of mine missing. Granted I'm absent minded so U can just fig I miss placed them. Then a large clock that was hung in the living room fell to the floor and shattered when noone was home, and yes it was mounted poorly, so u could blame it on that. And at first the old furnace didn't seem as loud when it ran, now it seems louder or maybe I notice more. I have noticed small water puddles in the basement with no source of the water. I have found animal feces in my childrens rooms, animal urine also. My Maltese has urinated in my sons bed, my schnauzer raised his leg and began to urinate infront of while I was in the basement doing laundry. This behavior has never happened with animals, and this is new for both of them. They bark at stuff that I can't see. My husband has seen a dark image in the kitchen on more than one occasion. He has experienced a haunting before he said he doesn't feel threatened. I am so scared. I don't sleep!!! I don't know what to do!!!

I keep no logs or write anything other than what I tell people. My dog acts strange on occasion, sometimes will not leave my side, others she's fine. But she too has apprehensions of going into a middle pass through room. She'll wait for me to walk through it with her. When things go out of place, I just fix them back. If the are ghost, I just turn my things back the way they were and sigh! lol.. I guess I just am not afraid. In fact, I've never felt more protected in this house than I have anywhere I have lived in my life. :) Maybe my ghosts like me or just like that I play games back! Who knows! :)

Hi, I know I have already posted here, but I'd forgotten to mention that when there is no movement, all the sudden a cold shivery cold "cloud" like feeling, it lasts less than a minute, this happened twice this week. My house is over 100 years old. Also, just after my dog walks through the pass through room, she throws up. She used to come and get me to take her out, but she doesn't anymore, and she's not changed food or anything. I do hear footsteps on the staircase, and a sturdy lamp broke the other day. Nothing on that area has moved at all. I wish they'd just have a conversation of some kind. I do feel comfort and protected here, do you think there is an explanation of that?
All of these things are ringing so true at the moment! We moved into our house nearly a year ago and slowly things have been happening that just don't make sense. The last few months have been the most active however, keys going missing and after weeks of searching high and low we find them sitting in plain view on the kitchen bench. Night lights and other electric toys in my sons room turning themselves on, glimpses of shadows and what seems to be a person darting out of a room nearly every night, a cold horrible feeling around my sons room and the bathroom next to it and chills and a horrible feeling that makes my hair stick up on the back of my neck sometimes when walking out of these rooms, the feeling of being touched on the shoulder, as if someone poked me but nobody was there! I feel like I'm going crazy but even my 2 year old son feels it and tells me frequently he's seen a 'scary' around the places I have! I don't know what to do now, is it friendly?! How can I make it go away or know what it wants!?
I live in a house which is new built. I live here with my mom & my 11 years old younger sis. I here sounds in n8 like someone is walking behind me.My mother unnecessarrily wakes up every n8 exctly on 4 am.The worst thing is my lil sis once saw a shadow little girl passing the hallway staring,loughing @ her. We felt these things jst for 1 week continuosly. But nw we dnt feel anything strange. That's a big relief aleast,right?????????
OK, I'm not sure what I believe and I don't know what's happening in my house so I will just put it out there.
A LITTLE HISTORY:
On 2/28/2010 my cat passed away. She was very sick towards the end. I had her for 20 years, she was a sweet little girl. After she passed my boy cat, who is 16 yrs old, went into a depression and for months he didn't act quite normal. I ended up adopting an older deaf female shelter cat. The two of them tolerate each other just fine. He is back to normal except he started to sleep in my spare bedroom, where he used to sleep with me in my bed.
He would still come into my bedroom when I went to bed to give me a love but would always run into the other room.
This is where things get strange.
About two months ago I started hearing my cat talking/meowing from his bedroom. Like he was conversing with someone or something. This went on for a few weeks until I finally went in there and asked who he was talking to because he was looking upwards as if looking for or at something in the air. I asked if he was talking to his sissy (the one that passed on 2/2010) I smiled and left the room. Within a few days the meows turned into growling with ears pinned back. Again when I went in to check on him and he was looking upwards and had big wide eyes and growling. I took him out of the room and he slept with me that night. The next night it repeated but this time he came running out of his room and jumped on my lap as I sat on the couch in the living room. Like something spooked him. Since that night he refuses to go into that room. I had to move his little box out of there. If I go into that room he will sit at the door and wait, he will not follow me in there. Since that night he has slept ON me, not next to me but laying completely over me, he's 16 lbs. This has been over the last 2 months or so. The last 2 weeks when I would get into bed I started to experience a feeling like someone or something was lying down on my feet on top of the covers. It doesn't matter if the lights are on or off. I've actually looked down at my feet with the covers over them while feeling this movement/pressure and again thought it was my cat that passed letting me know she was just checking on things, so I smiled and went back to reading and went to sleep.
Now the REAL scary part..
Last night, 1/6/2012, I went to sleep around 12:30 AM. I had watched a documentary regarding my favorite band so I was excited about my dreams to come that night. My cats were on each side of me in bed and we went to sleep. At around 3:30 AM my boy cat and I woke to my closet doors slamming into one another and it sounded like there was a rabid dog scratching at the doors from the inside. I mean like a huge wild animal. My cat high-tails it off the bed and into the living room and I freeze up. I watched in the dark while my closet doors are slamming around. I finally turn the light on and it completely stops. I didn't hear anything else and everything went quiet. I got up and turned ALL the lights on in the house and grabbed my cat and went back to bed BUT stayed awake until I had to go to work. I did not open the closet until 6:30 AM. My closet is very neat with nothing on the floor. It would be very easy to see anything in there because it a real small closet. My whole house is only 1000 sq.' There was no sign of rodents (urine or feces) plus whatever it was seemed to be big much larger then a rodent. There are no holes in the walls or ceilings I checked everything and there was absolutely nothing there!
What is going on? Should I be scared? Whatever that was last night was not my Mittens and it was not happy! There have been weird noises at night. My house is very old and is very noisy so I'm familiar with the creaks and stuff. But lately I swear the kitchen cupboard shuts by itself. I've been seeing black sweeps of something go from the hall into the kitchen or living room. A huge black sooty thing floating out of the corner of my eye or looking straight on it. Things are making me scared now. I live alone and I have to go back there. I've been there for 8 yrs. What should I do other than keep my lights on now???

My house is new and we moved in about 8 years ago. Recently i set my ipod down on my laptop on my nightstand. Then i read my book next to it. All of the sudden i will see my ipod fly off my nightstand and onto the ground near my bed. I get a little nervous but pick it up and set it back in my nightstand. This has happened a few times but twice today. I will also get very cold sometimes sitting in my room.What is going on? In no other places in the house odd things happen except my room. Also my dog will sit there and stare at me without leaving which she never does. Am i going insane or is paranormal activity able to occur in a new house that no one else has lived in except my family.
I lived at this address 7404 macarthur dr wonder lake ill for 18 years, this house is definately haunted, there is definately a number of witnesses to people dressed in 1800's clothes that witnesses seen.
Okay; my boyfriend moved into this house in Sep.. & about 2 months ago be started telling me he's heard loud footsteps upstairs when he's home alo e, glass be shattered, people talking; & has even mentioned being in the kitchen (which leads to the basement) & seeing a black faded person shadow & it has scared him to where his heart has stopped, & recently has told me he has been smelling burning like a straightener burning & even dirty deet or something. Ive been over there mannnny times & get very uncomfortable.. I get a HUGGGE vibe everytime I go near his basement steps.. I've seen black figures, & even a full body of a women, I've seen red eyes & it has even nudged my foot when him & i were cuddling.. scares the crap outta me. I have never gone down in his basement since its happened.. We're 16 & 17 years old & need advice on what to do about it. His father refuses to do anything about it, & won't believe us at all...
My wife and I were woken up at 3:30 by a loud noise which sounded like a cabinet door slamming in our kitchen. I went downstairs to inspect everything and couldn't find anything out of place and verified that the doors were not spring loaded. This is not the first time that this has happened. We also found a shoe box with the lid off. I watched my wife place it outside of our bedroom door with the lid on. Inoticed at 3:30 that it was off placed perfectly on its side. My wife commented on it this morning. We went away for a long weekend. I remember shutting our bedroom TV off, when we arrived at home 3 days later, it was on and loud.

On sunday I went to bed , i had a dream of this black faceless ghost grabing my hand, when i woke up on monday there was this bruise on my arm, then wird things started to happen, i started to get bite marks, cold chills when i enter my room, my hair stands up, i placed a camcorder and it was facing my bed , when i got back to the room the cammera was moved. do i have a evil ghost or is this all in my head, i am scard for me and my two liitle ones,
My 10yr old daughter woke up screaming 'How do they know my name, tell them to quit yelling at me. She said a tall man pushed her down in bed and told her not to move or someone she loved would be hurt. we thought maybe it was a ploy to sleep with us. But now we moved into that bedroom. For the last 2 weeks cabinets have been opened every morning, Glasses of milk are on the counter, I hear talking and walking up and down the halls. I took pictures. One picture shows an orbe thats floating and has 2 shadows on my icebox as well as shadows coming down the walls. The other picture you can see a shadow of a man that looks to be 6ft plus tall standing in our door way. We have objects in our home missing all the time and they just reappear. Simple things,, Phone chargers, clothes, socks, silverware, Mp3 player, cell phone. Lights flicker all the time. But the main things are the voices and the waling up and down the hall. I laid in bed last night and I actually felt someones finger tips run down my back from my shoulder to my lower spine. I had chills and it was so cold in my room. My 2 kids that are under 5 are scared. and my 10 year old daughter refuses to come anywhere near my home after her experience. She wants to know how they know her name and why they held her down in bed when she yelled for me and told her someone she loved would get hurt if she told.. I dont know what to do but I know i really need some help. From my kitchen to my back room you can feel the really thick presence. And it scares us all. I grew up in a haunted house and it scared me to death. The house was built in the 1770's and once I saw a man kneeling down at me eating something. He had a cowboy hat on. I threw the cover over my head and prayed like crazy. Then I saw a little black boy looking at me smiling when I leaned over my bed. Another time when my two sisters lived at home we all had to sleep in the same big bed. So I wake up and there are three bodies in bed with me and I only had two sisters. NO one else saw anything else going on. Very scary indeed. The house was sold and remodeled over the years and I still wonder if the new owners every get strange visits.
when I was younger I live in this house that i believed was haunted for about 4 years and werid thing would happen that just made me so scared to live there i would always feel like something was watching me, lights would go on by themself, i would see a figure of a man standing in my door way at night, my dog would always bark at my window, white orbs would show up on photos we took, my parents would wake up with scratches on their faces, and the longer we lived there things just got worst and my parents would always fight which they they never did before so i believed that it could have been a bad ghost. well we moved to a brand new house and i been living in my new home for aover 4 years and i never would think that this house would be haunted because its a breand new house but a few weeks ago after taking a shower i seen a black shadow dart across my parents room then today when i got home from school my mom told me she seen the same shadow and also the kitchen chair slamed down to the floor, and 5 minutes later she got a strong smell of feces and then it just went away so im really scared now ...... and when we moved in the house werid things would happen but i just thought it was my grandma but as of what happened last week and today i believe it to maybe begin a evil spirit!
I don't know if it's possible to annoy our entities, because when I needed to go to Michigan to care for my dad it was always spur of the moment when I had to leave.
This time I am preparing to go spend some time with a friend whose been in a car accident and A LOT of things that I wanted to take are strangely LOST! Plus, I fell down the stairs, and a few days later through a loose floorboard that was not as thin or unstable as one of the others in my hall.
I've actually spoken to my entity and stop fooling around this is serious. It is honestly like hindering me leaving. I will be gone longer than 6 months, and it's as if its saying not to go. The things missing are jewelry. I mean jewelry that is important to me that I would never misplace.
Whether they say not to provoke them or anger them I have actually demanded my items back and threatened not to return. LOL. Laughing matter or not I want my things back. I guess I'm a believer in I OWN MY HOUSE AND NOTHING IS GOING TO HAVE AN UPPER HAND in the fact I OWN my home, AND THE CONTENTS even if it's an entity that would be no longer welcome.
If it is an evil spirit, it will meet it's early match.

I had a paranormal activaty at my houes.I was in the basmeant playing then I haord my name be called it sad Logan but I was the only one home.
I feel comfortable and safe in my house of about 6 years now. Within the past year I'd say we have been finding strange puddles of water on the floor in our house. Sometimes the hallway or the living room. Now we do own 2 dachshunds and have a 3 year old daughter that could possibly explain the puddles, except that it doesn't smell like pee. It's just a decent sized puddle that looks like water. The only other strange things that I have noticed is that the toilet seat was up when I'm pretty sure I put it down to use just a little while earlier and I was home alone. I've never seen anything but my husband and I have heard loud noises from time to time always ending up to be nothing out of the ordinary after looking for the cause. Our house isn't that old but there was another family here before us when we bought it as a foreclosure. Just wondering what your thoughts are on our situation.
